Nikko geta are a traditional footwear craft from Nikko, Tochigi, developed around the area’s shrine and temple culture. They combine the woven bamboo-skin surface of zori with the raised wooden base of geta, making them practical for Nikko’s slopes, snow, and wet ground. Each pair is carefully woven from hundreds of bamboo strips, then sewn onto a wooden sole, creating a sandal that is both sacred in origin and practical for everyday walking. Masashi Yamamoto is a certified traditional craftsperson and master maker of Nikko-geta.
