Nikko geta are a traditional footwear craft from Nikko, Tochigi, developed around the area’s shrine and temple culture. They combine the woven bamboo-skin surface of zori with the raised wooden base of geta, making them practical for Nikko’s slopes, snow, and wet ground. Each pair is carefully woven from hundreds of bamboo strips, then sewn onto a wooden sole, creating a sandal that is both sacred in origin and practical for everyday walking. Masashi Yamamoto is a certified traditional craftsperson and master maker of Nikko-geta. If you want to learn more about Nikko-geta and visit his workspace off the beaten path you may with advance notice. To have custom Nikko-geta crafted prices can range from ¥30,000–¥50,000 depending on the many fantastic customizing options available. The time to complete your custom Nikko-geta varies.
