Bottlecap.jp began in 2025, when Aran and Samanatha, married co-founders of Bottlecap KK, received a massive social media response to their videos about Japan’s traditional craft artisans. A few of their videos had crossed over 1 million views, demonstrating global acknowledgement of the quality and history behind Japan’s traditional crafts and tradeskills.
But, they also noticed during their first year of residence in Tokyo that locating and gaining access to experiences and workspaces, even those intended to be openly available to travelers from overseas, often led to confusing reservation procedures, language and culture barriers and, in some cases, contradictions between what was marketed versus the true quality of the offerings.
This ultimately inspired them to create Bottlecap.jp as a way to centralize information on available traditional craft experiences and education in Japan, as well as to curate those offerings to help ensure that travelers and enthusiasts never end up feeling like they got less than they expected.

All listings shown on Bottlecap.jp are the result of sorting through hundreds of listings and pages on the internet about Japan’s traditional craft experiences, painstakingly checking the details by hand, and making a determination of whether they adequately represent stewardship of traditional practices, generational ownership and transfer of knowledge, hold local or national recognition, and maintain alignment between marketed materials and the lived customer experience.
On occasion, Aran and Samantha are themselves able to visit and participate in these experiences, verify details in person, and as a result elevate those listings to “Bottlecap Authenticated” status on the directory. This article explains our internal criteria in more detail.
What does it mean for an experience to be listed on Bottlecap.jp?
For any listing to appear on Bottlecap.jp, regardless of whether it holds a “Bottlecap Authenticated” status, there need to be the following things that can be verified through the publicly-available marketing online:
- A physical address to the location of the actual experience, not just a meeting point.
- The location of the experience cannot show signals suggesting an overly-commercialized intent, such as a high-volume atmosphere combined with a low staff-to-customer ratio.
- Photos showing the space in which the experience takes place.
- Photos showing the actual items that participants make or keep.
- Transparent, fair pricing shown and explained. No “contact us for pricing.”
- Company/corporate profile can be viewed on their website and/or Commercial Disclosures as required by law.
- Information on their website or marketing that describes the origin of their business or the experience levels of their staff members.
- Marketing includes statements on the origins of materials and products used to provide the experience.
- Details on which languages are available to customers, either through spoken instruction or written materials.
What does it mean for an experience to be listed as “Bottlecap Authenticated?”
“Bottlecap Authenticated” indicates an experience where these minimum requirements have withstood in-person verification by Bottlecap founders and staff. More than that, it shows that we truly believe visitors to these experiences are going to depart with a deeper understanding of Japanese tradition and culture, demonstrated through genuine stewardship of the practices and legacies of their crafts.

We also plan to regularly re-verify our listings to ensure that the information remains accurate over time, and that our curation continues to reflect our goal of presenting the best available experiences for travelers and craft enthusiasts.
Transparency is something we also hold as a standard for ourselves and our brand, which is why Bottlecap has created "Japan Handmade Forum," a community Discord where anyone from Japan and around the world can collaborate with us, by providing feedback and recommendations, and share their own travel experiences and craft knowledge.
