More Details
Azumino is located on the alluvial fan of the Northern Alps, and wasabi grows in nutrient-rich spring water. Thanks to this blessed environment, Daio Wasabi Farm, Japan's largest flatland wasabi farm, has been operating for over 100 years. The farm has beautiful walking paths, streams, scenic water wheels and feilds. An idyllic scene of old-fashioned, wooden water wheels alongside the river can also be enjoyed from the walking trails. There is also a local shrine and cave to visit. The water wheels were constructed here for the filming of Kurosawa Akira's ""Dreams"" in 1989 and have been left standing. From late April to late October the scenery can also be enjoyed from short tours on inflatable clear bottom boats (about 20 minutes, 1600 yen). Daio also has cafes and restaurants to showcase delicious paired wasabi dishes. Admission to the farm is free! Closed on December 31st. Open March to November (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), December to February (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM). *Entry is not permitted outside of business hours. Customers with pets must keep them on a leash. Pets are not allowed inside the souvenir shop, Wasabi-do. Pets are welcome on the terraces of all four restaurants. Bringing your own lunch is not permitted.
