Katori Lamp Using Kyo-Wagasa Techniques (Hiyoshiya)

In this workshop, you will create a KOTORI table lamp, which highlights the materials and structure of a traditional Kyoto-style umbrella.
Select your favorite pattern and complete your own unique lamp. During the workshop, you will also be guided you through the umbrella atelier.

More Details

Founded in the late Edo period, Hiyoshiya is the only remaining traditional umbrella maker still practicing the techniques of kyo-wagasa (traditional Kyoto-style umbrellas). Guided by the philosophy that ‘tradition is continuous innovation, the company also develops lighting designs inspired the structural principles of the wagasa (traditional Japanese umbrella). In this course, you will be guided through each step of the process and will take home the finished table lamp (about 14 cm in diameter). You will be guided through the production steps and be able to take home the finished table lamp. The workshop lasts 90 minutes.

Reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance. Groups of 2-20 people. For last-minute or same-day reservations, please contact us by phone. This workshop is held on weekdays. If you wish to book on weekends or public holidays, please feel free to contact us for availability. Held every day from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). Nearby transportation

By Bus from Kyoto Station: Take City Bus Line 9 toward ‘Nijo Castle ​/​ Nishigamo Depot (approx. 30 minutes) and get off at Horikawa Teranouchi. From there, it is a 2-minute walk. By Subway: From Kuramaguchi Station on the Karasuma Line, it is about 15 minutes walk. Please Note: If you are coming by car, you may use the Hiyoshiya dedicated parking space (No. 11 in the Hōkyō-ji Garage). Parking is on reservation only, so please contact us in advance if you wish to use it.
