More Details
See how Kyoto’s famous bamboo is replaced by delicate bamboo crafts with the skill of a master craftsman passed down from generation to generation. You will experience coaster weaving using Kyoto’s “Madake” bamboo under the guidance of a bamboo craftsman. After an explanation of the history of Kyoto bamboo crafts, visitors will observe the splitting and peeling of Madake bamboo, the preparation of tools for weaving bamboo, and the actual process of weaving bamboo to make bags. Materials for coasters will be prepared in the workshop. Only a small fraction of the bamboo surface is used for the finished product, and more than 80% of the Madake bamboo is discarded. This is an excellent product that shows the spirit of craftsmanship in pursuit of novelty and universality.
