The process of pounding approx. 900-degree Celsius (1,652-degree Fahrenheit) Yasuki steel with a hammer to create the blade you envision from scratch will be an unforgettable experience. Shojiro Hasami Hamono Kougei Co., Ltd. has a workshop near Narita International Airport in Matsuzaki, Narita City, Chiba Prefecuture. Here you’ll experience making a letter opener where they produce kitchen knives, scissors, and other blades using So-Hizukuri technique, which involves hammering heated metal to form a blade, without using a mold. The process of pounding approx..900-degree Celsius (1,652-degree Fahrenheit) Yasuki steel with a hammer to create the blade you envision from scratch will be an unforgettable experience. The letter opener will last a lifetime, and you can enjoy watching its changes in appearance at home over the years as you use it. After the experience is over, you can take home a charm with characters on it along with your knife. The So-Hizukuri technique has been used since ancient times by swordsmiths in Japan. There's no set shape to the letter opener you'll make. You'll be able to create whatever shape you like working together with an artisan. After shaping, you complete your original piece by sanding with emery paper.

We recommend you wear something you don't mind getting dirty. We offer complimentary engraving of your chosen characters on the knife. Please specify up to 4 characters using kanji, katakana, or alphabet letters. The engraving is not available if you select the option to have the handle wrapped with rattan.
