This plan will let you experience weaving using a traditional hand loom at Sawai Orimono Textile Factory in Hachioji City, Tokyo. You’ll have fun creating textiles with weaving techniques that have been passed down for about 120 years since the studio’s founding. The term Tama-Ori weave covers five types of woven cloth originating in Tokyo’s Tama region, which has a thriving textile culture. Come immerse yourself in the environment where these distinctive fabrics are created. You’ll experience both the craftsmanship that goes into making each piece and a serious tradition that ties the past to the future. Even within Japan, Tama-Ori weave is an unique, diverse kind of fabric. After learning about its history, you’ll have the chance to try hand weaving on an actual loom. The weaving process requires great attention to detail. Through it you’ll understand the passion that these artisans put into each piece of cloth, as well as why the techniques have been passed down for generations. You’ll spend about 30 minutes at the loom. By the time your arms and legs start to feel a little tired, your Tsumugi fabric will be complete. The understated beauty of the fabric’s subtle sheen embodies Tokyo’s casual aesthetic sense. Framing and taking it back home, it might remind you of the sound of the loom, as well as the skills and passion of the artisans who create the beautiful crafts of Tokyo.

A minimum number of participants: 1 person Due to having only one hand loom, we generally accept bookings for one person. If your schedule is flexible, we can also arrange bookings for two people. You need to be aged 18 and up before you book. We recommend wearing your clothes that are easy to move around. Booking in advance cut off: 5 days
