Classes are available in English and Japanese. Nobuya Hayashi has run the Workshop Kurogane since 2011. With fluent English and 24 years of experience, he has welcomed the outside world into his workshop and strives to share his love for traditional Japanese knife-making. Since 2021, Nobuya-sensei has taken on his own apprentice, Jesse from Canada, to provide even more support in his English-led workshops. One Day Knife-Making Workshop Enjoy the traditional techniques of forging, grinding, and heat treatment during a one-day experience using modern knife steel (blue paper steel). Each class includes one pre-manufactured handle of your choice, or you can opt for a custom-made handle for an additional fee of 10,000 yen. 7 hr 30 min *Please note that tamahagane steel is not used for this one-day experience unless specified in advance, and additional costs will apply. Six Day Tamahagane & Knife-Making Workshop In this six-day workshop, participants can smelt and refine their own steel using beach sand magnetite, then fashion a knife using the tamahagane steel they helped to smelt. Note: Depending on the number of guests on a given day, knives might not always be completed by the end of the workshop and may require shipping to a location of the customer's choosing. Please note that the shipping costs will be added to the workshop cost. Accommodation Guests are responsible for arranging their own accommodations or can choose from the two options below: 1. Senba is a guesthouse located a 10-minute walk from Workshop Kurogane. It includes food and board. (8,000 yen per night) 2. Our private cabin is a 5-minute walk from Workshop Kurogane and can accommodate up to two people. It does not include food, so guests will be responsible for their own meals. (6,000 yen per night) Guests can book one of the options listed above for the six-day workshop through the booking page. Please be aware that any additional nights beyond six will incur an extra fee.
