Ishikawa Prefectural Institute for Yamanaka Lacquerware

The Ishikawa Prefectural Institute for Yamanaka Lacquerware is the only training centre in Japan that teaches the disciplines of woodturning and lacquering. On weekdays, you can see trainees practicing woodturning.

More Details

An important collection of works, including pieces designed by some of the most prominent local craftsmen, such as Mr. Kawagita Ryozo, who is regarded by Japan as a living national treasure, is displayed in the exhibition room. You can also try your hand at woodturning under the tutelage of a Yamanaka lacquerware artisan (reservations required). This center is the origin of Yamanaka lacquerware and was opened on April 1, 1997, as a core facility for promoting the industry, where people can learn the nation's top "turning wheel techniques," train successors, develop human resources who will lead the lacquerware industry in the future, and conduct independent research. Four centuries have passed since a group of woodworkers from Echizen brought woodturning techniques to the Yamanaka region, and our ancestors have honed their skills to the point where they can proudly boast the best in Japan. The Ishikawa Prefecture Turning Technique Training Center is a place where you can learn from these predecessors and hone your Yamanaka lacquerware turning techniques. Trees that have lived for hundreds of years are brought back to life using traditional techniques. As you discern the properties of each piece of wood and focus your five senses on the wheel, it is also a place of spiritual training for both teachers and students. Come and master the art of turning wood while gaining experience in woodcraft, blade making, and the various fields that accompany them.
