More Details
In the northern Kanto region are Kasama City (Ibaraki Prefecture) and Mashiko Town (Tochigi Prefecture). The name "Kasama-shiko" was created by combining the names of these two towns. Kasama City and Mashiko Town are close to each other, separated by mountains, and since ancient times have been blessed with the clay, water, and wood for fuel needed to make Sue ware (hard earthenware brought over from the Korean Peninsula). These two regions share common characteristics in artifacts excavated from old kiln sites dating from the 8th to 10th centuries, suggesting that they shared the same pottery-making techniques. Potters from all over the country have flocked to this artistic pottery town, and the number of potters has now grown to over 600. Kasama Ceramic Art College (a branch of the Ibaraki Prefectural Industrial Technology Innovation Center) not only trains Kasama ware talent, but also conducts research and development on ceramics and provides technical support to the Kasama ware industry. You can study in a well-equipped environment surrounded by nature. First-year students begin by learning about the characteristics of clay through their own senses. They then learn a wide range of techniques, including potter's wheel, hand-building, tatara, plaster moulding and decorative painting. They also deepen their understanding of glaze mixing and firing techniques, as well as the history of the craft and theories of ceramic design. Through applied production assignments and graduation projects, second-year students develop creative skills and imagination with an eye toward life after graduation. Foreigners can enroll, but they must have the necessary qualifications for admission and a residence status for the duration of their studies (2 or 1 year). For admission, students must have the qualifications for university admission as stipulated by the School Education Act and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Regarding residence status, Kasama College of Ceramic Art is not a school based on the School Education Act, so it is not eligible for a student visa. If you are accepted to the College of Ceramic Art, you must apply in person to obtain a "Cultural Activities Visa" residence status. Please note that all classes are conducted in Japanese.
