Kanazawa Craftsmens College

In October 1996, the Kanazawa Craftsmen's College was opened, the first of its kind in Japan, with the aim of preserving and passing on traditional techniques related to historical buildings and landscapes, and training skilled craftsmen.

More Details

The opening of the college was spearheaded by the mayor of Kanazawa at the time, and involved repeated discussions among various trade associations, with the cooperation of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and other related parties, leading to the first steps being taken. Our city, Kanazawa, has been handed down from hand to hand since the feudal era, and the skills of artisans have been passed down to the present day. As a city where artisanal skills have shaped a unique culture, Kanazawa shines in a unique way among the many cities in Japan. However, this traditional artisan culture, which is the very essence of Kanazawa's individuality, is facing a difficult situation in recent years, with the modernization of lifestyles and mechanization causing a decline in techniques and a lack of successors. In order to address this issue, the university was established with the objectives of passing on the traditional and highly advanced craftsmanship that remains in Kanazawa and nurturing talented people, as well as collecting, researching and making public materials, and deepening public understanding and interest in the skills of artisans through activities such as the restoration of cultural properties.
