The Tokyo Glass Art Institute
At our institute, we remove any preconceived notions or fixed ideas about glass from students' minds, positioning it as a material like earth, wood, stone, metal, etc., and guiding them to creative work based on free imagination.
More Details
From 10 types of technique education to creative education that develops individuality. We teach the essence of glass, its history, and its properties, as well as the current state of glass craft and glass modeling, and provide a comprehensive study of the necessary glass knowledge and basic techniques while looking ahead to future developments. Over 1,100 hours of intensive classes per year. At our institute, we have abandoned the apprenticeship-style education system and instead provide a streamlined and proactive educational method to enable students to master a certain level of technique and creative methods in a short, intensive period. To this end, we offer classes five days a week, six hours a day (excluding lunch break), for a total of over 1,100 hours per year. Thorough instruction by dedicated subject instructors and full-time staff. We have instructors who are active at the forefront of the glass craft, glass industry, and glass modeling art world both in Japan and overseas. Practical instruction is provided by specialized instructors, mainly graduates of our institute, who provide technical instruction on each glass craft technique as well as general modeling. Leveraging over 40 years of experience to support employment and independence. Since its founding in 1981, the Institute has produced over 1,000 graduates, many of whom are active at the forefront of the glass art and craft worlds. Graduates run over 100 studios both in Japan and overseas. Utilizing this strong alumni network, we have established a system to support students in finding employment. Our curriculum includes career support seminars led by graduates and visits to studios and companies run by graduates, helping students to better understand future careers. Even after graduation, we offer career counseling and job introductions, and we also offer technical support based on our accumulated know-how to those who wish to start a new glass studio or expand its facilities. The only "night course" in Japan where you can study while working. Students work as members of society during the day, and after work, they go to school to study glass art as students. To reduce the financial burden, students can choose to study while working. This is an environment where students can take their time and study at their own pace, even if they want to work and eventually become active as an artist.
